Hiking Holidays in Skagen
Skagen is the perfect destination for a hiking holiday, with its beautiful coastlines, unique landscapes, and historical terrain. This hike of about 41 km moves from the coastal town of Frederikshavn to the top of Denmark, Skagen. The route starts and ends along the coast, where you walk along the beach with a beautiful view out over the sea. Midway, the route moves inland, through forests and open landscapes. This route is particularly good if you want to combine it with cultural experiences before and after the hike in Frederikshavn and Skagen.
On this beautiful hike of approximately 56 km along the North Sea Trail, you'll journey from Skagen down towards charming Sæby. During the hike, you'll experience walking along the beach, through forests, and in open landscapes. Along the route, it's possible to find accommodations in the towns where the route makes stops.
Birdwatching
Skagen is one of Denmark’s best destinations for birdwatchers, with a recorded 360 bird species. The area's varied nature – including beaches, heaths, forests, and sea – provides ideal habitats for birds, especially migratory species on their way to and from their breeding grounds. Here, you can spot rare species like the red-necked grebe and Siberian rubythroat while enjoying the stunning scenery and fresh air.
The Gray Lighthouse, located on the Skagen Peninsula, was inaugurated and first lit on November 1, 1858, half an hour after sunset. It is Denmark's second tallest lighthouse, only one meter shorter than Dueodde Lighthouse on Bornholm. The impressive structure, designed by architect N.S. Nebelong, was built over four years at a cost of 200,000 rigsdalers. The lighthouse's light, visible 20 nautical miles away, serves as an important navigational aid for shipping in the Skagerrak and Kattegat.
