Gøgl past and present
Sømosen is a raised bog located between the high hills of Jyske Ås that has an exciting history. Up until the last century, the slopes of the bog were home to over 40 families, all of whom were market traders, artists, jugglers or musicians. They were attracted by the desolate location of the bog and settled in primitive huts and earth caves where they lived during the winter. In the summer, they travelled around the country and performed. Probably also in the neighbouring town of Hjallerup, where a horse market has been held since 1744. Today, Hjallerup Marked is the largest horse market in Northern Europe, attracting 200,000 visitors, 400 horses, 2,000 volunteers and around 6 km of stalls every June.
