For many people, the scent of warm spices, crispy crackling, brown gravy and freshly baked Christmas biscuits is inextricably linked with Christmas. Food is, in fact, an important part of Danish Christmas traditions – and just as much an occasion to get together and enjoy time spent with one another.

The Danish Christmas table is brimming with traditions that have been passed down through the generations. On Christmas Eve, in many homes, roast goose or roast pork is served alongside browned potatoes, brown gravy and red cabbage, before the meal is rounded off with risalamande and the hunt for the whole almond. Throughout December, there are also Christmas lunches, biscuits, sweets, æbleskiver and hot mulled wine.

Christmas isn’t just about gifts and decorations; it’s also about enjoying the wonderful flavors that come with it. In the world of Christmas baking, there are a number of indispensable delicacies that simply scream “Christmas.”

Fluffy Æbleskiver

At Dorf Møllegaard, you can experience true coziness and nostalgia as the housewife bakes Æbleskiver on the old stove. This is not just an ordinary Æbleskiver experience – it’s a journey back in time, where you can buy and enjoy Æbleskiver in the charming rooms of a beautifully preserved old home.

Did you know that?

Despite the name, the æbleskiver we eat today do not usually contain apples. But the name actually makes perfect sense if you look back at their history.

The earliest Danish æbleskiver were slices of apple dipped in batter and then boiled or fried in fat. Recipes for this type of æbleskiver can be found, for example, in Danish cookbooks from the 18th century.

In the early 1800s, it became more common to bake æbleskiver in the special æbleskiver pan we know today, and around the middle of the century, the actual piece of apple began to disappear from the recipes.

Today, these small, round æbleskiver are a true Danish December classic – often served warm with icing sugar and jam.

Mulled wine

Mulled wine is Christmas in a glass: a warm, sweet and spiced drink traditionally made from wine with added sugar and Christmas spices such as cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. It is often served with raisins and chopped almonds.
