Street art "Out in the open" - SMATES - Samsøgade 36-38
In the Øgaderne neighbourhood of Aalborg, the Belgian artist Smates has created the gable mural Dancing in the Rain, which links the area’s history with contemporary life. The work celebrates community, play and the memories that, for generations, have been an important part of everyday life in these old farmsteads.

With the gable mural Dancing in the Rain, Smates has created a work that bridges the past and the present in Aalborg’s Øgade neighbourhood. The motif depicts a girl in a yellow raincoat playing in puddles, inspired by the many childhood memories and the strong sense of community that have characterised the area’s courtyard environments for generations.
To emphasise the narrative, the artist has painted the historic buildings in shades of grey as a symbol of the past, whilst the child in the foreground is depicted in warm colours as a representation of the present. In this way, the artwork creates a visual link between the area’s history and the people who live there today.
The result is an atmospheric gable mural that celebrates memories, community and life in the neighbourhood.
