Story of the Month - Citadel Fladstrand
How did Frederikshavn develop from a quiet fishing village into a strategically important fortress town? In August's story of the month, we delve into Fladstrand's military past and the secrets of the citadel.
400 years ago, the area around what is now Frederikshavn was characterised by wind, waves and small fishing villages. The largest of these was called Fladstrand. During the Thirty Years' War, defensive structures were erected in the region, and with the construction of Nordre and Søndre Skanse, the transformation of Fladstrand began.
In 1686, the ramparts were connected to form the mighty Fladstrand Citadel, which later gained great importance during both the Great Northern War and the Anglo-Danish Wars. The citadel put Fladstrand on the military map and was crucial to the development of the town.
In this edition of "History of the Month", the museum educator explains why the citadel was built here, what role it played – and what traces can still be seen today.
The event is for paying guests of the museum.
