Root Vegetable Festival on Hærvejen
Experience an atmospheric late-summer’s day in the countryside when the Root Vegetable Festival in Hellum invites you to get up close to vegetables, herbs and flowers. Look forward to field walks, tastings, stalls and outdoor activities at Jyske Ås. Entry is free.

The Root Vegetable Festival is a day-long celebration of vegetables and agriculture at Meldkærvej 211 in Hellum. Here, you can explore fields featuring around 200 different vegetables, herbs and flowers, and gain an insight into the journey of root vegetables from farm to fork. The festival takes place on 13 September from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, and admission is free.
Field walks amongst vegetables and root vegetables
On the festival’s field walks, you can get a closer look at cultivation and hear about the work involved in growing vegetables. Mette takes visitors around the fields and talks about cultivation, harvesting and the many different crops. Field tours run from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm and again from 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm.
Stalls, tastings and inspiration
The festival’s various stalls open from 10.00 am. Here, amongst other things, you can meet trainee chefs from Hjørring and FGU Frederikshavn, and watch flower arranging demonstrations. Several of the stalls offer tastings, so you can experience some of the root vegetables and other vegetables in a new way and get inspiration on how to use these ingredients in the kitchen.
Lunch and café at the Root Vegetable Festival
At midday, you’ll have the chance to enjoy lunch prepared by Frk. Madsen’s Spisehus. Lunch is served between 12.00 and 15.00 and requires a separate ticket. There’s also a café serving coffee and cake, amongst other things, if you fancy a break along the way.
Activities for young and old
The Root Vegetable Festival isn’t just about what grows in the ground. You can also help create a jungle trail through the woods and visit a machinery exhibition. The combination of fields, nature, activities and food offers the chance to enjoy a relaxed day in the countryside whilst learning more about vegetables – from cultivation to serving.
The festival takes place in the heart of nature at Jyske Ås and is organised by Køkkenhavens Venner. The day ends at 4.00 pm.
