Nightlife in Aalborg
Aalborg is a city that doesn’t go to bed early. As darkness falls, the city’s bars, pubs and nightclubs come alive with music and people. Right at the heart of it all lies Jomfru Ane Gade – or simply ‘Gaden’, as the locals call it – where the party traditions date back several decades.
Jomfru Ane Gade – From Merchant Street to Party Street
When the conversation turns to Aalborg’s nightlife, it is hard to avoid mentioning Jomfru Ane Gade, or ‘Gaden’ as it is commonly known by locals. This narrow, cobbled street in the heart of Aalborg is filled with bars, pubs and nightclubs, and has become a hub for both locals and visitors. But the history of Jomfru Ane Gade goes back much further.
The street can be traced back to the late 16th century and was probably named after Jomfru Ane Viffert. For several hundred years, the street was characterised by merchants’ houses and wealthy merchants, and a few of the old half-timbered houses still form part of the streetscape. They help give the street a distinctive character, where history stands side by side with modern city life.
In 1967, development gained momentum when Jørgen and Grete Steffensen opened the Gaslight nightclub. The following year saw the opening of Fyrtøjet, and over the next few years several restaurants, pubs and nightclubs sprang up. The former commercial and residential street was gradually transformed into the lively centre of nightlife that Jomfru Ane Gade is known for today.
